Slings and Chairs and Penguins, Oh My!

Mom's trach tube has been removed! She is doing very well. Today when the physical therapists sat her up on the edge of her bed, she was doing so well that they decided to use a sling to move her into a chair. When I spoke with Dad, Mom had been sitting in the chair for half and hour, holding herself upright and holding her head up. Mom's sense of humor is definitely intact; when Dad told me on the phone about the sling they had used to move Mom into the chair, Mom said to him: "It's like the slings they use to move beached whales back into the ocean."

A friend gave Mom a small stuffed penguin, and she uses it to practice holding, grabbing, and moving. She can reach for it and lift it up to her face with her right hand. Dad is hopeful that Mom can move to an acute rehabilitation center within the next few weeks.

Dearest Sandy, My prayers for you are being answered, oh, thank you, Mighty and Merciful God! I am encouraged by your sense of humor! When I relayed to you some humor in previous emails, I wasn't sure if it was appropriate but I knew that finding the smile is so important, in all circumstances.

I remember when I was driving everyday to Sacramento, when Dave was in the hospital pre and post heart surgery. Everyday I would hear a song on the radio, ( and i have never heard it since!) and the chorus said something like, "sometimes God holds back the storm and sometimes He holds back the child" and I felt comforted with that picture. The realization that when my life is going somewhat smoothly, that is when God is holding back the storms from raging in my life, but then, sometimes He lets the storms loose and that is when He hold us. Protecting us from the worst of the storms. Tears would flow freely because I knew that since I was in the midst of a loosed storm, God was surely not only with me but Holding me. That's why I know that He has been Holding you ever so closely to His heart while this storm rages around you. I so look forward to connecting with you, Sandy, with a hug and a warm smile of which you have reflected on me in the past. I am so grateful for the strengthening and healing that you are experiencing! Hugs, Maris

tickled with the last update, thanks so much for the time to keep your circle of family, friends and neighbors at one with your mom's progress.

yes, sandy's sense of humor was very much alive a well on tuesday morning too! her wit is her gift to all of you, to all of us that moments of laughter in the middle of all the seriousness of the situtation are the moments that we will remember most and spur her on to the next milestone.

brittany, jonathon, jarred and joel all send a howdy... you know the wave that we do as we all pass one another on lazydog as we are racing out to something which requires only a window down wave.... like we are in a parade!! lol!!!

love to all of you,
janie
